WHO WE ARE +

We are the Chair of Pervasive Computing Systems and the long-standing research department TECO at KIT. We are the ones who invented the web browser on the smartphone, created the first digital objects, and built the first European sensor network. We are an expert team with excellent international connections, happy to send good students abroad. We have excellent contacts in the industry, are located in the SAP Research Center, and have an interdisciplinary focus.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR +

You are looking for an exceptional Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis, in a very inspiring environment, and want to collaborate with internationally recognized top scientists from research and industry. You are highly motivated and want to contribute your own ideas. You are very gifted practically or theoretically, or both. You are interested in helping build a new chair. You work independently but enjoy being part of a team. You are interested in working with the latest technology.

COURSES +

An overview of all offered courses can be found on the official page of the chair.

There you will find, among other things, a list of all courses offered this semester. Materials for specific lectures can also be found directly here: Mobile Computing, Ubiquitous Computing and HCI.

RECOGNITION OF COURSES ABROAD +

Please fill out the following form BEFORE you leave. Then send me an email with the abbreviation contained therein. Please also note the leaflet for the recognition of academic achievements abroad.

EXTERNAL THESES AT COMPANIES +

Please note that for external theses, a project contact from the chair to the company must exist to ensure academic quality. Due to high demand, external theses are only supervised if the topic is issued by a staff member of the chair. Topics issued by the industry side are no longer supervised. As a rule, the work requires the company supervisor to be present at meetings at TECO. Please ask your contact person at the company first. Please consider that it is statistically likely that the creation of the thesis will be driven less by a scientific question and more by the company's economic interests. However, your grade will be based solely on the scientific content of your work.

RESPONSIBILITIES +

Please note that you are responsible for the correct execution of your thesis. If you are in your 7th or even 8th Master's semester, you will need an extension. You must arrange for this yourself. Your thesis should be registered in a timely manner. You must communicate to your supervisor when you plan to start the work. Registration cannot be done just before submission. Your thesis submission must be complete. You are responsible for this, not your supervisor. Only what has been submitted can be included in the evaluation of the thesis.

Scalable Silent Speech Using Phoneme Recognition

Master

Earables are earbuds equipped with multiple sensors, enabling advanced interaction and sensing capabilities. Among them, OpenEarable 2.0 stands out as the device with the most sensors globally, enabling a wide range of interaction possibilities. Prior research has demonstrated that earables can detect various physiological and behavioral signals, including silent speech – the articulation of speech without producing audible sound. This capability has promising applications in privacy-preserving interaction, accessibility, and communication in noisy environments.

Eye Tracking with innovative EOG-Glasses

Master Bachelor

We have a pair of special glasses equipped with electrodes for electrooculography-based (EOG) sensing. EOG is super cool because it allows eye tracking without cameras, relying only on the electrical signals the eyes produce while moving! You will explore how electrical signals captured at the face can detect eye movements, blinks, and nose-rubbing. There are many ideas what to do in a thesis, from comparing these EOG glasses with in-ear EOG systems, to coming up with creative user input through eye gestures.

Diagnosis and Treatment with the OpenEarable

Master Bachelor

Earables are earbuds that are equipped with multiple sensors. Among them, the OpenEarable stands out as the device with the most sensors globally, enabling a wide range of interaction possibilities. These capabilities can and have been used to both diagnose and treat different disorders and diseases. Examples include bruxism or coughing events.

Key Influencers of Consistent Physical Activity engagement

Bachelor

“Gesundheit zum Mitmachen” is a municipal health promotion initiative launched in Bad Schönborn with the goal of advancing community health through sports and physical activity. Initiated in 1992, a unique longitudinal study has followed up to 1,090 participants over a span of 29 years, integrating both panel and follow-up components. Participants provided comprehensive data via questionnaires addressing their physical activities, work situations, mental health, and eating habits, as well as regular health assessments conducted by physicians. Aim of this thesis is to identify the key factors that support sustained engagement in sports and overall well-being.
