Background
Earables are earbuds equipped with multiple sensors. Several studies have already explored their potential in medical contexts, and a review of health-related indicators measured with earables exists (Choi et al., 2022). While this survey provides a valid approach to identifying and evaluating relevant research, it falls short in synthesizing the state of the art and making its findings easily accessible.
In the context of EarXplore (Hummel et al., 2025), one of the other four major areas of earable research has already been mapped to an interactive online database. As this database should act as a community resource, it is thought of to be extended to other domains of earable research. The goal of this thesis is to extend the platform by adding the topic of health applications.
Your Tasks
- Conduct a systematic search for scientific publications on earables in health applications that are not included in Choi et al. (2022), covering the period from 2021 to the present. Define clearer inclusion and exclusion criteria than those used in Choi et al., 2022. Additionally, assess whether the search strategy described in Röddiger et al. (2022) should be adopted as well.
- Identify the kinds of questions researchers might ask when using the platform and determine which research criteria can best address them. Encode the identified studies according to these criteria. Existing criteria from Choi et al., 2022 can serve as a starting point, and further medical information categories can be drawn from the appendix of Röddiger et al. (2022). Make sure to also add technical information like it is for interaction (e.g., headphones, earbud, etc.)
- Based on the collected information, extend EarXplore by adding the dimension of health applications. This includes preparing relevant data for each of the four existing views (Tabular, Graphical, Similarity, and Timeline) and deciding how best to visualize medical information – a domain that is less homogeneous than interaction research. A potential approach could involve overarching categories with subcategories for specific health-related applications.
- Using the information you have retrieved to depict and discuss the current state of the field with respect to earable health applications as well as its research gaps and opportunities
- Optional Bonus: Developing an additional view that extends EarXplore’s general capabilities and fits within its framework.
