Project Overview

OpenEarable is the world’s first fully open-source AI platform for ear-based sensing applications featuring true wireless audio. Developed by TECO at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, it is bundled in a compact, modular earpiece design. It integrates a rich array of on-board sensors, including a 9-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU), pressure and temperature sensors in the ear canal, inward- and outward-facing microphones, a speaker, push button, and RGB LED, all based on the Arduino ecosystem.

Our Goal

The project's goal is to provide an ideal prototyping and research platform for next-generation wearable technologies that is engineered for flexibility, ease of use, and extensibility.

Highlights

  • Rich Sensing: Features the most sensors ever integrated into an earphone, all within a tiny form factor suitable for both development and research.
  • True Wireless Audio: Functions as a powerful sensing device that also provides true wireless audio capabilities.
  • Fully Open-Source: All firmware, hardware, libraries, and documentation are released under permissive open-source licenses for maximum accessibility and customization.
  • Developer-Friendly: Built on the Arduino-based architecture with seamless sensor integration, making it easy to use and extend.
